Robert W. Johnson, 83, of Lebanon, died Monday at Samaritan Lebanon
He was born January 28, 1924 in Miller, SD and graduated from Lake Preston
High School in South Dakota in 1941. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps
during W.W. II.
Bob married Mary Lue Turbak on June 28, 1947. They were blessed with and
raised 13 children (7 boys and 6 girls including three sets of twins). They
Bob graduated from Northern State Teacher's College in Aberdeen, SD in 1951.
Through the years he mixed his art of teaching high school Commercial
Science in Minnesota and South Dakota with his passions for farming,
ranching, and construction work.
Bob married Darlene Nelson on June 11, 1984. His love for her and his will
to live are exemplified by the fact that he stayed with us long enough to
wish his wife "Happy Anniversary" just moments before he was taken to his
Bob was involved with many service organizations, including service as
Disabled American Veterans Chapter Commander in Rapid City, SD, D.A.V.
Chapter Commander for Lebanon and State Commander for Oregon, life member of AmVets and The American Legion, Treasurer and Trustee for Lebanon First
United Methodist Church, Advisory Board member for the Lebanon Senior
Center, as well as a member of the Lebanon Kiwanis Club.
Grateful for having shared in his life are his wife Darlene of Lebanon,
children: DaNita Chaplin of Shelby NC, LaRita Johnson of Spearfish, SD,
Peggy Napier of Sioux City, IA, Bobbi Lue Johnson of Spearfish, SD, Ginny
Magnuson of Wilmington, DE, Robert W. Johnson, Jr. of Rapid City, SD, Allan
Johnson of Spearfish, SD, James Johnson of Newcastle, DE, Jerome Johnson of
Fall Creek, WI, Chris Johnson of Rapid City, SD, Ronald Johnson of
Piedmont, SD, Elizabeth Haskins of Sioux Falls, SD and Gerard Johnson of
Ledyard, CT, Darlene's Children: Arno Nelson of Eugene, Lori Burgmaiser of
Missoula, MT, 20 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. His parents,
brothers Justin, George, Howard, and Charles and his grandson, Jeremy
Chaplin preceded him in death.
Viewing will be from 4 - 7:00 pm, Monday June 18, 2007 at the Black Hills Funeral Home in Sturgis. A celebration of his life will be held at 10:30 am, Tuesday June 19, 2007 at the Grace United Methodist Church in Piedmont, with Steve Trefz officiating. Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery, with full military honors provided by the Sturgis Veteran's Honor Guard.
In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established in Robert's name.
