Donald W. Wolf, 82, of Rochford, passed away December 28, 2009, at the Lead-Deadwood Regional Hospital. He was born February 3, 1927 in Hill City to Walter W. Wolf and Bessie M. Barker Wolf.
While growing up Don and his family lived in the Black Hills except for two years when they lived and worked in California. He graduated from Spearfish High School in 1944 and then served his country during the remainder of World War II in the Navy. After his Honorable Discharge he attended the University of Denver where he earned his degree in Civil Engineering.
Don married Luella Rowley in June, 1957. They had three sons: Jay, Randy, and Mike. Luella died in 1995. Jay and his son, John Paul Wolf, live in Levelland, Texas. Randy, his wife, Teresa, and their children: Christopher, Tanner, and Peyton live in Sanford, North Carolina. Mike and his wife Martha live in Bear Creek, North Carolina. They have 5 children: Janie, Mack, Michael, Dawson, and Bailey.
After Luellas passing Don became reacquainted with Barbara Griffin, whom he had known since childhood. They were devoted to each other for ten years until he passed away.
Don was a pilot. He treasured the outdoors, particularly the Black Hills. He enjoyed hunting, hiking, camping and golf, and was a member of the Tomahawk Golf Club, where he was also a marshal. Don loved music, reading (particularly history), playing cards, and most of all spending time with his family.
In addition to his children and grandchildren he is survived by Barbara at their home; his sister, Ruth and her husband, Jim, of Spearfish; his sister, Joan Otto of Covina, California; many nieces and nephews, and Barbaras sons: Mike (Glennda) and Milo (Belinda). He was Grandpa Don to Barbaras grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Don was especially close to his nephew, Marty Wolf and Martys wife, Cindy.
After he and Luella were married Don worked for Morrison-Knutson in Alaska and then worked many years for Chevron throughout the lower 48. Later, he had his own business.
He was a member of the Elks for over 35 years and was a Lifetime Member. He formerly belonged to the Free Masons.
Don was active in the many communities where he lived and will be remembered for always being there to help friends, neighbors, and anyone who was in need.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Richard Wolf; his grandson, Steven Wolf; and Barbaras son, Walt Griffin.
Cremation has occurred. A memorial service will be held at the Rochford Community Church Saturday, January 2, 2010, at 11:00 am, with fellowship to follow at the Rochford Community Hall.
The family suggests memorials to either the Spearfish Regional Hospital Hospice of the Northern Hills or the Rochford Community Hall.
